What does it mean to be an artist?

I’ve been asking myself this question for the last 4 years and it doesn’t get any easier to answer.

What I do know; is an artist is not a performer, a producer, or a celebrity; because all 3 of those things can be replicated. They’re replaceable. I think, an artist is what inspires. It’s like, someone who pushes the narrative forward in their own direction, using the foundation laid by others; other artists.

I remember when I started making music, I was really inspired by an artist. Like, REALLY inspired. 12 hour days just plugging away at my laptop. Biking to the internet cafe for wifi. At first it was a replacement for video games, but it seriously became an obsession. I REALLY liked making music.

I found out how I wanted to express myself.

My family didn’t like it so much, when it became an obsession I mean, and everyone at my school would make fun of me for it. They’d be like “Oh look, its little skrillex” or some shit. For a few years I was always alone. It was hard, having no-one relate to who I was or wanted to be.

But skipping through the story, I powered through and now I am who I always wanted to be.

That story to me is what it means to be an artist, because I’m the only one that can tell it. You can remake my music or do it better, but I wrote that song, and it’s a reflection of my story. I’ve heard that in a few years, all the music I make is just going to get replaced by AI, but that can’t actually happen to an artist, cause no matter how cool or accurate that song is that it makes, It’s not my song, or my story, or the conversation I’m having with you when you listen to my music. It’s just my data reinterpreted.

I’ll never be able to tell another artist's story, but I can be inspired, then learn to tell mine. So don’t be afraid of being inspired. Understand who you are. Who you want to be. Then keep pushing for it. Make tons of mistakes.

Get made fun of; you're a loser, you're a wannabe, you'll never make it. Get used to those comments, keep trying. Keep doing what you love. Keep working hard. Understand yourself more, and finally tell your story and make something meaningful; because it takes a long time to make something that can’t truly be replaced.

So after 4 years, here is my data. Here is my “unreplaceable”. Here is my Wireframe.
